My New Rangefinder

I broke down. I was intrigued by this style of camera. No I didn’t break down and buy a Leica, that’s a bit out of my price range right now. What I did get was a used Yashica 35 GSN. I haven’t gotten to put any film through it, but the I have pressed the shutter and wound it back. All I have to say is wow the camera is so quiet and that is really impressive.

The challenges of course with this style of camera is getting used to using the rangefinder and the duel focusing style it brings. Those are also what makes this very exciting.

I don’t know if this will take over my T-70 as a backup camera, but I’m excited to see how it performs. I’ve read that the lens is sharp and it appears to be pretty fast with a maximum aperture of 1.7.

I’m excited to see where this little rangefinder takes me and see what kind of images that can be created with it.

If you have any experience with rangefinders or the Yashica specifically let me know in the comments.

Thanks and keep creating out there.

Thanksgiving Ice Storm

Over Thanksgiving I was able to go home and visit my family for a few days, which I don’t get to often. The day before all these pictures were taken the temperature was around 60 degrees, the next day was around 24 degrees. Well it got very cold and very dangerous over the next few days making travel pretty difficult, but I was able to snap a few pictures. 2015-11-28 14.25.59frozen conniferfrozen flowerIce FieldIce treeother stufftree flower

Update #1

So I just got my first roll back and it wasn’t real pretty at all. I only had about 5 shots that I could even save. There was only a few that I really enjoyed a little bit at all. It is humbling to have your photos come back and be pretty terrible.

So I will take this as a learning opportunity to get better and hopefully improve my craft.

Here are the first three shots that were even worth anything.

My New Project

Well I am embarking on a new and exciting photography project. I will be working with film photography and trying to hone my craft that way. I am looking to create some beautiful images through an analog medium. To assist me in my project I will be using two cameras, the first and my main one will be a Canon EOS 5 and I absolutely love this camera. I am using a 50mm 1.8 and a 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 iii for my lenses with that camera. My backup will be my Canon T70 which uses FD lenses and I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 28mm that’s a 2.8. I will be working with both color and black and white film. So if anyone has any suggestions on any film to use, or any film scanners to use let me know.
Thanks

Street Photography

Were I live there are a few things to photograph other than buildings.  So I decided to take a little trip to a different city. I went to Salina, KS in search of some other things to photograph. These are what I found. Catwalk.jpg

Walking around I found some interesting structures and this was looking up towards this catwalk that over hangs a  crosswalk on the main road. Mainstrett.jpg

This was taken just looking down an empty part of the sidewalk. I really enjoyed the symmetry that it produced.Mini Fountain.jpgWatson Stieffel Theater.jpg

These both were fun shots to take because the water was gurgling and spouting up at random times making the timing of the shot difficult and shooting at a fast shutter speed was a necessity.

The Stiefel Theatre was a fun picture to take not only because of who was playing there, but because of the contrasting colors that were offered from the background sky and the building itself.

Cottonwood River Shoot

This is from a little impromptu shoot that happened when the Cottonwood River  started to overflow after some massive amounts of rain that hit our area and caused this river to overflow and run extremely quick.

Shot over an overflowing Cottonwood River.

This shot was a fun one to get. The reason being is that where I was standing I could see where my old fishing spot used to be. Now it was all under water. The clouds were an amazing addition as well.

This was a great shot and a tough one to get as well.  The way the river was swirling around made it extremely tough to freeze the action and show how fast the river was actually moving. If you look directly at the trees in the background you can see the trees that hang over my normal fishing spot 15 foot under water.

Keep checking back to see more of my photos and keep track of my adventures.

Thanks!

Hello From Behind the Lens

This is my hello. Hello to everyone reading this. I am a photographer who is based out of a small Kansas town. Most of my shots are going to be a look into what most consider a pretty boring part of the world. Well that’s my mission to take what most would consider boring and mundane and show that it is vibrant and full of life. So give me a follow and let me take you into a world of the mundane made beautiful.

My backstory is one that doesn’t need to be told. It isn’t very interesting, it’s much like the place I grew up bland and boring. I grew up in an even smaller town than I’m living in now where the number of cows outnumbered the number of people.

My fascination with photography started when I was able to start seeing things differently and noticing the small things that some don’t see.  I also really enjoy just going out and being in the moment and the scene where the image is being shot.

So here’s my hello. Give me a follow to see what I have already shot.
